Outdoor Alliance

The Access Fund is a founding member of the Outdoor Alliance, a coalition of user groups that work to ensure the conservation and stewardship of our nation's land and waters through the promotion of sustainable, human-powered recreation.

The Access Fund takes the lead on these current issues:

1872 MINING LAW REFORM

Preserve Climbing throughout the Desert and Mountains of the West

19th Century values and policies still govern 21st Century high tech mining practices. The laws adopted in 1872 to govern prospecting with a pick and shovel, and to help settle the West before the invention of the light bulb, are the same laws in use today. These outdated laws have no regard for modern day outdoor values or the economic and environmental future of the West.

Late last year, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to reform our nation’s policy on hardrock mining. Right now the U.S. Senate is considering reform as well.

SUPPORT THE ROADLESS AREA CONSERVATION ACT

Protect our few remaining Roadless Areas

In 2001 the Federal government proposed to protect roadless areas. The American public loved the idea and the "2001 Roadless Rule" became one of the most popular federal regulations in history.

Even though these areas are National Forests, the Federal government now wants to let individual states decide how roadless areas are managed, letting them re-jigger different levels of ecosystem protection and impinge on the wild qualities that make these places special to climbers and other responsible public land users.

We already have more than 380,000 miles of National Forest System road—nine times the size of the federal interstate highway system. Let's keep these Roadless Areas unique and healthy.
